The Ministry of Coal in India has launched a pioneering pilot project for Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) in Jharkhand's Jamtara District. The project at the Kasta coal block aims to convert coal into valuable gases such as methane, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide for industrial applications. This initiative, under Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), highlights the Ministry's proactive diversification efforts within the coal sector. By utilizing in-situ coal gasification, the project aims to tap into economically unviable coal resources and produce synthetic natural gas, chemical feedstocks, fertilizers, and more. Supported by the Ministry of Coal, the project involves collaboration with Ergo Exergy Technologies Inc. from Canada. The two-year project consists of a technical feasibility phase followed by coal gasification at a pilot scale.
