Indonesia's Green Hydrogen Revolution: Decarbonizing Maritime Transport
Key Ideas
  • PT HDF Energy Indonesia partners with the Ministry of Transportation, PT PLN, and PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry to study decarbonizing Indonesia's maritime sector with green hydrogen.
  • Renewstable® hydrogen power plants in Eastern Indonesia aim to provide clean electricity to ASDP's ferry routes, converting maritime fleets to zero-emission solutions.
  • PT PLN initiates hydrogen pilot projects and plans to invest up to USD 2.3 billion in deploying green hydrogen power plants, while HDF Energy explores hydrogen for auxiliary systems on large vessels.
  • The collaboration showcases Indonesia's leadership in green hydrogen innovation, with recognition from French and international stakeholders for paving the way to a zero-emission maritime future.
In a significant move towards Indonesia's energy transition, PT HDF Energy Indonesia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with key stakeholders to study the decarbonization of the country's maritime sector through green hydrogen. The collaborative effort includes the Ministry of Transportation, PT PLN (Persero), and PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero), with the support of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The focus will be on Eastern Indonesia, where HDF Energy is developing Renewstable® hydrogen power plants that integrate solar energy and green hydrogen production for continuous and clean electricity supply. The project aims to replace traditional diesel engines in maritime transport with green hydrogen-based propulsion systems, significantly reducing emissions. HDF Energy's fuel cells are designed for this purpose and have the potential to convert fleets to zero-emission solutions. PT PLN has already started hydrogen pilot projects and plans substantial investments in deploying green hydrogen power plants across Indonesia. Additionally, HDF Energy is exploring hydrogen as an alternative for auxiliary systems on large vessels in partnership with PT Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna (PT BAg). The collaboration highlights Indonesia's commitment to green hydrogen innovation, positioning the country as a leader in the Asia-Pacific region. The partnership has garnered positive remarks from stakeholders, including the French Ambassador to Indonesia and the Director at the IMO, emphasizing the importance of multi-stakeholder cooperation in achieving a zero-emission maritime future. This initiative is part of HDF Energy's broader efforts in Southeast Asia, with recent collaborations in the Philippines and Vietnam to explore green hydrogen solutions for maritime vessels.
