Italy is preparing to unveil the SouthH2 Corridor network, designed to transport renewable hydrogen from the Southern Mediterranean to Northern Europe. This initiative, supported by the European Commission, aims to establish connections between North Africa, Italy, Austria, and Germany to supply renewable hydrogen to European industries and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Companies like Snam, TAG, GCA, and bayernets are collaborating on the 3300 km pipeline project, which could facilitate over 4 million tons per year of hydrogen imports from North Africa, contributing significantly to the EU's hydrogen import targets for 2030. Additionally, Italy's Energy Minister mentioned the possibility of incorporating existing pipeline links with Libya and Tunisia into the corridor and exploring the conversion of hydrogen into ammonia for shipping to Europe. The project signifies a crucial step in Europe's efforts to decarbonize its industrial processes and emphasizes the importance of renewable energy sources like hydrogen in achieving sustainable energy transitions.
