Key Ideas
  • KEPCO partners with Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) to assess feasibility of producing 333,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum in Western Australia.
  • Feasibility study to include project engineering, cost modeling, collaboration with Korean and Australian authorities, and integration of Australian and Korean firms.
  • Australian Government's Future Made in Australia package unveils AUD $6.7bn of green hydrogen tax incentives, offering AUD $2/kg of green hydrogen produced for up to 10 years.
  • Partnership between KEPCO and WGEH seen as significant in positioning Australia as a major player in the global green hydrogen sector and meeting Korean marketplace demand.
Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has joined forces with the Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) to explore the viability of generating green hydrogen in Western Australia. The ambitious WGEH Stage 1 project plans to deploy 6GW of hybrid wind and solar panels to potentially produce up to 333,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The collaboration aims to advance project engineering, cost modeling, and engage with authorities from both Korea and Australia, fostering potential sources of support. Additionally, it seeks to integrate Australian and Korean companies for project partnerships, design, and off-takers. WGEH CEO, Ray Macdonald, highlighted the project's importance in positioning Australia as a key player in the global green hydrogen arena and catering to demands in the Korean market. KEPCO's Vice-President, Chanhyuk Chun, expressed the company's eagerness to leverage WGEH's expertise and expand its presence in Australia. The recent unveiling of the Australian Government's AUD $22.7bn Future Made in Australia package, which includes AUD $6.7bn in green hydrogen tax incentives, further accentuates the country's commitment to green hydrogen production. The Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive (PTI) scheme, part of this package, offers AUD $2/kg of green hydrogen produced for a decade, aimed at boosting the sector's growth and sustainability.
