The Kerala government has received investment proposals totaling Rs 72,760 crore from four major companies to establish green hydrogen and green ammonia facilities in the state. These initiatives are part of the state's draft green hydrogen policy, aiming to promote green energy and decarbonization. The companies plan to focus on exporting green ammonia to drive growth in the sector. Substantial subsidies are being offered, including a Rs 275 crore capex subsidy per project and a 100% exemption on electricity duty for 25 years. One of the companies has proposed dual investments of Rs 22,062 crore and Rs 4,511 crore. The state is actively pursuing land identification for these projects, particularly exploring areas around tea plantations in eastern Kerala. ReNew, a prominent decarbonisation company, has put forward a Rs 26,400 crore investment for a green hydrogen project with a significant production capacity. This investment aligns with India's broader target to establish 5 MTPA green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 and boost green hydrogen exports under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Green hydrogen is viewed as a key strategy for decarbonizing sectors heavily reliant on hydrogen, providing a sustainable solution for economic growth.
