Linklaters has provided legal advice to TE H2, a collaboration between TotalEnergies and EREN Group, in establishing a partnership with VERBUND, Austria's primary electricity company, for the development of green hydrogen projects in Tunisia. The initiative, known as the 'H2 Notos' Project, is focused on generating green hydrogen through the electrolysis of desalinated seawater, utilizing renewable electricity sourced from solar and onshore wind farms.
The project's initial phase aims to produce 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, with a long-term goal of reaching 1 million tons per year in southern Tunisia. By capitalizing on the 'SoutH2 Corridor,' a dedicated pipeline linking North Africa to key European markets like Italy, Austria, and Germany, the project anticipates operational readiness by 2030.
Responsibilities within the partnership entail TE H2 and VERBUND managing the project's development, financing, construction, and operations, spanning from green electricity generation to hydrogen production. VERBUND will oversee the transportation of the produced hydrogen to Central Europe.
Furthermore, a significant milestone was achieved with the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Tunisian State on May 27, indicating a collaborative effort towards advancing green energy endeavors.
The Linklaters team, led from Paris, spearheaded the structuring of the partnership and the agreement with the Tunisian government. This legal support underscores Linklaters' dedication to promoting sustainable energy projects and international cooperation in the field.
