Masdar, a clean energy-focused developer based in the UAE, has partnered with France-based TotalEnergies to explore the development of a commercial green hydrogen to methanol to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project in Abu Dhabi. The aim of this collaboration is to address the challenge of decarbonizing industries that are hard-to-abate, such as aviation and maritime. By utilizing green hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources and incorporating CO2 captured from industrial emissions, the project seeks to produce green methanol and SAF, contributing to sustainable practices. Masdar, established in 2006, is dedicated to expanding its global renewable energy capacity to 100 GW and increasing green hydrogen production to 1 million tonnes by 2030. Recently, the company secured $1 billion through a green bond offering to support its investments in new renewable energy projects. The agreement between Masdar and TotalEnergies follows a successful test flight conducted in 2023, demonstrating the potential of converting Methanol to SAF. This partnership signifies a step forward in the development of innovative and environmentally friendly solutions for the aviation sector, aligning with sustainability goals and driving progress towards a greener future.
