Mauritius is facing growing pressure to meet its rising power needs and shift towards cleaner energy sources. To address this, the country has requested India's technical expertise and collaboration in the energy sector, particularly in renewables. The Mauritian Ministry of Energy is working closely with India to receive support in energy planning, regulatory development, and the implementation of renewable energy projects. India is set to send a team of experts to assist Mauritius in achieving its target of generating 60% of electricity from renewables by 2030. The collaboration between the two countries extends to various proposals submitted for technical, financial, and capacity-building assistance in the energy and water sectors. One of the key areas of focus is on piloting and scaling renewable energy projects in Mauritius, with plans to start with a small pilot project and then scale up to larger initiatives. Additionally, Mauritius is looking to adopt green hydrogen and has sought India's expertise in the design and deployment of offshore hydrogen projects in the Indian Ocean. India has been actively supporting Mauritius in its renewable energy endeavors, with projects like the 8 MW Solar Photovoltaic Farm at Henrietta being a testament to their strong bilateral partnership. This project, executed by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), is expected to significantly reduce CO2 emissions annually, aligning with Mauritius's sustainable development goals. The collaboration between Mauritius and India illustrates a positive outlook towards achieving a sustainable energy transition and strengthening their bilateral relationship.
