A Moroccan government committee recently approved green hydrogen projects with a total value of 319 billion dirhams, equivalent to $32.5 billion. These projects aim to produce ammonia, steel, and industrial fuel, with various international companies being selected to undertake the initiatives. The projects include partnerships between UAE's Taqa and Spain's Cepsa, Morocco's Nareva, Saudi Arabia's Acwa Power, and Chinese companies UEG and China Three Gorges. The government's objective with green hydrogen is to meet domestic energy targets and increase exports to the European Union, following the EU's Green Deal announcement. By 2030, the EU plans to import 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen, presenting a significant opportunity for Morocco. Notable developments include agreements with France's TotalEnergies and Engie for the production of green hydrogen and its conversion into ammonia and other fuels. Morocco is also focusing on expanding its renewable energy capacity, targeting 52% by 2030 compared to the current 45%. The projects are set to receive land allocations of up to 30,000 hectares each once preliminary agreements are in place, further solidifying Morocco's commitment to green hydrogen and sustainable energy practices.
