Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI of Morocco and President Macron of France, Morocco, and TE H2, in partnership with TotalEnergies, the EREN Group, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), and A.P. Møller Capital, have signed a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation for the 'Chbika' project. Situated in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region near the Atlantic coast, the project aims to establish 1 GW of onshore solar and wind capacity to produce green hydrogen through the electrolysis of desalinated seawater, which will then be converted into 200,000 tons of green ammonia annually for the European market.
The initiative marks the first phase of a broader plan to develop a world-scale green hydrogen production hub. TotalEnergies, CIP, and A.P. Møller Capital will play key roles in different aspects of the project, focusing on renewable energy production, port development, and infrastructure respectively. The agreement emphasizes Morocco's exceptional renewable energy potential and its contribution to the Kingdom's economic growth.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed gratitude for the project and highlighted Morocco's competitive renewable resources. The CEO of TE H2, David Corchia, sees this agreement as a significant step towards supporting the energy transition, industrialization, and job creation in Morocco. Philip Christiani from CIP praised Morocco's position in the global energy transition and the partnership's role in achieving net zero targets. A.P. Møller Capital's CEO, Kim Fejfer, emphasized the importance of developing the green hydrogen industry in Morocco and the consortium's commitment to collaboration with local authorities and stakeholders for the project's success.
