A consortium of Danish companies, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and AP Møller Capital, along with TE H2, have joined forces to construct a 1GW renewable energy project in Morocco. The initiative aims to produce green ammonia by utilizing solar PV and wind capacity. The project, known as the Chbika project, has received approval from the Moroccan government for land reservation, marking the commencement of pre-FEED studies. The development will be situated in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region near the Atlantic coast. The production of 200,000 tons of green ammonia generated from the 1GW solar PV and wind capacity is targeted for the European market. This venture signifies the initial phase of a broader plan to establish a substantial green hydrogen production hub. Morocco is strategically positioned in the MENA region as a significant green hydrogen hub, offering proximity to Europe for exporting green hydrogen and green ammonia. The collaboration involves TotalEnergies, a key player in the energy industry, which aims to capitalize on Morocco's renewable resources to support Europe's Green Deal objectives. TotalEnergies' Chairman, Patrick Pouyanné, views Morocco as an ideal partner due to its abundant solar and wind resources, emphasizing the country's potential in advancing green energy initiatives. Additionally, the consortium partners, including TE H2 and A.P. Møller Capital, have designated responsibilities for various aspects of the project's development. The agreement reflects a positive sentiment towards hydrogen as a sustainable energy source, with a focus on leveraging Morocco's renewable potential to foster international partnerships in the green energy sector. The project aligns with the goal of achieving a greener future by producing green ammonia for the European market, highlighting the transition towards cleaner energy alternatives.
