Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI of Morocco and French President Emmanuel Macron, the Moroccan government and TE H2, in collaboration with partners TotalEnergies, EREN Group, CIP, and A.P. Møller Capital, have signed a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation for the 'Chbika' project in Morocco's Guelmim-Oued Noun region. The project aims to establish 1 GW of onshore solar and wind energy capacity to drive green hydrogen production through the desalination of seawater, producing 200,000 tons of green ammonia annually for European markets. This venture marks the beginning of a plan to create a large-scale green hydrogen hub in Morocco. Key partners will focus on developing renewable energy resources, port infrastructure, and logistics for the project while supporting economic development in the region.
TotalEnergies' Chairman and CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, commended Moroccan authorities for their support and highlighted the country's ideal conditions for renewable energy production. TE H2's CEO, David Corchia, sees the project as a crucial step in Morocco's energy transition, industrialization, job growth, and clean energy supply to Europe. Partners CIP and A.P. Møller Capital also praised Morocco's leadership in global energy transition efforts and expressed commitment to the 'Offre Maroc' initiative. The 'Chbika' project signifies Morocco's renewable energy potential, strategic importance in Europe's green energy goals, and significant progress in sustainable hydrogen production and economic development.
