The European Commission has approved an additional 111.7 million euros in funding for Greece's Motor Oil to expand its renewable hydrogen project, targeting a production capacity of 7,500 tonnes per year by 2026. The project will be pivotal in establishing a hydrogen market in Greece and setting up a sustainable energy center at the Corinthian refinery in Agioi Theodoroi. Together with partners like CERTH-EKETA, DLR, and others, a 30MW electrolysis plant named EPHYRA will be developed to produce green hydrogen for both the refinery and other industries in the region. Another grant of 127 million euros has been designated for the IRIS project, focusing on CCUS and e-methanol production at the same refinery, utilizing renewable hydrogen and captured CO2. Motor Oil also plans to engage in hydrogen pilot projects across various sectors and collaborate with stakeholders under the Trieres project to explore the applications of hydrogen. The strategic Blue Med plan aims to develop a hydrogen value chain in Greece, highlighting the company's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
