NTPC has initiated its Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, marking a significant step in sustainable transport infrastructure. The introduction of hydrogen-fueled buses is a proactive move towards reducing carbon emissions in the region. Union Power Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated the project, emphasizing the importance of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The project includes a hydrogen fueling station, a solar power plant, and five fuel-cell buses that are specifically designed to operate in challenging conditions at an altitude of 11,562 feet. These buses can cover 300 km on a single hydrogen refill and are capable of functioning efficiently in sub-zero temperatures and low-density air, demonstrating their resilience. The hydrogen station, supported by a 1.7 MW solar plant, has a daily capacity of 80 kg and is expected to cut 350 metric tons of carbon emissions annually. Additionally, the system will produce enough oxygen to offset the impact of planting approximately 13,000 trees, underlining the project's environmental benefits. The Minister's symbolic 12 km journey in one of the buses highlighted its practicality and the potential of green hydrogen technology in remote regions like Ladakh.
