Oman to Create World's First Liquid Hydrogen Corridor to Europe
Key Ideas
- Oman will establish a groundbreaking liquid hydrogen corridor connecting it to the Netherlands and Germany, focusing on upstream production aligned with national targets.
- The project, led by government-owned green hydrogen entity Hydrom and supported by OQ, will enable the export of renewable liquid hydrogen from the Port of Duqm to Europe.
- ECOLOG will facilitate the shipment of liquid hydrogen using vessels with zero boil-off, enhancing efficiency and reducing losses in transportation.
- The initiative includes large-scale green hydrogen projects by global consortiums in Duqm and Dhofar, with plans for a third land auction round for mid-scale projects.
Oman has agreed to pioneer the construction of the world's first commercial-scale liquid hydrogen corridor, establishing a connection between the Sultanate and key European countries, the Netherlands and Germany. This innovative project is set to be managed by the government-owned green hydrogen entity, Hydrom, with a primary focus on upstream production that coincides with Oman's national goals. OQ, the state-owned energy group, will be responsible for developing the hydrogen plant, storage facilities, and export capabilities, enhancing the corridor's supply chain. The transportation of renewable liquid hydrogen will take place from the Port of Duqm to destinations including the Port of Amsterdam and strategic logistics centers in Germany. To ensure efficient and sustainable shipment, UAE-based ECOLOG will utilize vessels with zero boil-off technology. On the European end, the corridor will be supported by re-gasification import terminals in Amsterdam, enabling the distribution of hydrogen to industrial consumers in the Netherlands and Germany through various channels such as pipeline networks, rail connections, and barge distribution. Additionally, 22 global consortiums have been awarded large-scale green hydrogen projects in Duqm and Dhofar, marking significant progress in the region's hydrogen industry. Hydrom is also gearing up to launch its third land auction round, focusing on mid-scale hydrogen projects. This initiative not only showcases Oman's commitment to sustainable energy solutions but also highlights the growing importance of hydrogen in international trade and transportation.
