The Peruvian Ministry of Production has granted approval for the Detailed Environmental Impact Study of the Green Hydrogen Production Plant – Horizonte de Verano project in the provinces of Caylloma and Camaná, Arequipa, Southern Peru. The $11.2bn project, developed by Horizonte de Verano (Verano Energy), will focus on producing green hydrogen for ammonia used in the chemical and energy industry. It involves the construction of a water desalination plant, a solar PV plant, an electrical substation, and a multi-buoy terminal for product export. The project will be implemented in five phases, reaching a capacity of 5.85 GW of solar generation and 1.65 Mt of green ammonia production by 2032. The first phase, expected to start operations by mid-2027, comprises a 1.5 GW solar plant and an ammonia capacity of 420 kt/year. Horizonte de Verano aims to establish itself as a significant green ammonia producer, focusing on exports to position Peru as a key player in green hydrogen production in the region, contributing to the country's sustainable industrial development.
