Pioneering Cross-Border Hydrogen Pipeline in Europe
Key Ideas
  • GRTgaz and Fluxys hydrogen initiate a call to assess the interest for a 150 km hydrogen transport infrastructure connecting Dunkirk, Ghent, and Antwerp.
  • The project aims to support decarbonisation efforts in heavy industrial areas by facilitating the transport of green and decarbonised hydrogen.
  • The collaboration between the two companies reflects a shared vision of building a European hydrogen market and contributing to the continent's economy decarbonisation.
  • The initiative aligns with the development of local hydrogen transport networks in the region with a goal of commissioning by 2030 and the completion of initial infrastructures by 2026.
GRTgaz and Fluxys hydrogen, subsidiaries of leading energy infrastructure companies in France and Belgium, respectively, have unveiled plans for a groundbreaking project to create a cross-border hydrogen pipeline between France and Belgium. The proposed 150 km network aims to link the industrial hubs of Dunkirk, Ghent, and Antwerp, facilitating the transportation of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen. This initiative comes as a response to the decarbonisation challenges faced by heavy industries in these regions, including steel, refining, and chemicals sectors. The call for expressions of interest, open from October to November 2024, signals the beginning of a comprehensive assessment to gauge the economic viability and demand for the hydrogen transport infrastructure. Both GRTgaz and Fluxys are actively involved in developing local hydrogen transport networks, such as the DHUNE network in Dunkirk and the forthcoming infrastructures in Belgium, in alignment with the broader goal of establishing a robust hydrogen market in Europe. The CEOs of the companies, Sandrine Meunier and Pascal De Buck, emphasized the importance of creating infrastructures capable of supporting large-scale hydrogen transportation to foster the transition towards a more sustainable economy. Their joint commitment reflects a strategic collaboration to play a pivotal role in the decarbonisation journey of Northwestern Europe, positioning the region as a leader in green energy innovation and infrastructure development.
