GRTgaz and Fluxys hydrogen, subsidiaries of leading energy infrastructure companies in France and Belgium, respectively, have unveiled plans for a groundbreaking project to create a cross-border hydrogen pipeline between France and Belgium. The proposed 150 km network aims to link the industrial hubs of Dunkirk, Ghent, and Antwerp, facilitating the transportation of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen. This initiative comes as a response to the decarbonisation challenges faced by heavy industries in these regions, including steel, refining, and chemicals sectors. The call for expressions of interest, open from October to November 2024, signals the beginning of a comprehensive assessment to gauge the economic viability and demand for the hydrogen transport infrastructure. Both GRTgaz and Fluxys are actively involved in developing local hydrogen transport networks, such as the DHUNE network in Dunkirk and the forthcoming infrastructures in Belgium, in alignment with the broader goal of establishing a robust hydrogen market in Europe. The CEOs of the companies, Sandrine Meunier and Pascal De Buck, emphasized the importance of creating infrastructures capable of supporting large-scale hydrogen transportation to foster the transition towards a more sustainable economy.
