- The projects will focus on demonstrating the safe and efficient use of green hydrogen in steelmaking processes, validating technical feasibility, and aiming for low-carbon iron and steel production.
- The National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an outlay of Rs. 19,744 crores until FY 2029-30, aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and lead the global transition towards clean energy.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has approved three pilot projects in the steel sector under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd., Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd. (Ranchi) are the entities awarded these projects with plant capacities ranging from 40 to 3,200 tons per day. The total financial support from the Government of India for these projects amounts to Rs. 347 crore. These pilot projects are expected to be operational within the next three years and will play a crucial role in scaling up green hydrogen technologies in the country. The main objectives of these initiatives are to identify advanced technologies for utilizing green hydrogen in steelmaking, thereby contributing to low-carbon iron and steel production. The projects will showcase the safe and efficient use of green hydrogen, assess technical feasibility and economic viability, and potentially revolutionize the steel industry in India. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with a significant budget, aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy and reduce its reliance on fossil fuel imports. Through these initiatives, India aims to lead the way in technology and market leadership in green hydrogen, contributing to significant decarbonization of the economy and setting an example for the global clean energy transition.
