The LH2CRAFT project, funded by the EU's Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking and UK Research & Innovation, is pioneering the safe and efficient marine transportation of liquid hydrogen to address the pressing need for decarbonisation in the transport sector. With the European Green Deal Strategy targeting a 90% reduction in transport emissions by 2050, the project aims to leverage the potential of liquid hydrogen as a high-energy fuel while tackling its storage and transportation challenges. By developing innovative storage solutions for long-distance transport, including a 180m³ containment system, LH2CRAFT not only addresses societal energy needs but also strengthens the EU's position as a global maritime leader. With 14 partners from nine countries collaborating on this 48-month project, which includes major classification societies, technical universities, and industrial partners, LH2CRAFT seeks to create highly skilled jobs, advance technological solutions, and set international regulatory standards. The project's objectives, from developing a Cargo Containment System for LH₂ shipping to securing regulatory approvals and demonstrating the viability of the system through prototypes, highlight its commitment to sustainability and innovation.
