Plug Power has finalized a deal to supply 25 megawatts (MW) of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer systems to a customer in Europe, signaling the beginning of a significant partnership focused on decarbonization. The project, set to be executed in phases, aims to reduce the customer's carbon footprint by utilizing green hydrogen. Plug Power plans to deploy five 5 MW containerized PEM electrolyzers initially, with the potential to scale up to 2 gigawatts (GW) of electrolyzer capacity. CEO Andy Marsh highlighted the market potential for green hydrogen in Europe and emphasized Plug's readiness to contribute to achieving decarbonization targets.
The company's current initiatives include a 100 MW PEM electrolyzer project with Galp in southern Europe, as well as the deployment of 5 MW electrolyzer systems across various industries like glass and steel manufacturing. Plug Power is also engaged in 7.5 GW of basic engineering and design package (BEDP) contracts to further enhance its presence in the green hydrogen sector. Additionally, Plug's hydrogen production capabilities include a liquid hydrogen production capacity of around 25 tons per day, supported by in-house manufacturing of electrolyzer stacks and advanced engineering for hydrogen storage systems.
Moreover, Plug Power has secured a substantial conditional loan of up to $1.66 billion for hydrogen-related projects, showcasing the company's commitment to expanding its green hydrogen footprint.
