Revolutionizing Port Logistics: Hamburg Embraces Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles
Key Ideas
  • HHLA and Clean Port Logistics Cluster in Hamburg have inaugurated a test field for hydrogen-powered port logistics, with a refuelling station receiving EUR 3 million government investment.
  • The project, supported by Germany's National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen, aims to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission logistics and port operations by testing hydrogen technology in various equipment.
  • HHLA is committed to becoming climate-neutral by 2040, focusing on decarbonizing the logistics sector through electrification and the use of hydrogen for heavy-duty vehicles, with the goal of enhancing sustainability in transportation.
  • The initiative not only benefits HHLA but also provides a platform for other companies to explore decarbonization and test climate-friendly transportation solutions through the use of green hydrogen for their operations.
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) in collaboration with the Clean Port & Logistics Cluster in Hamburg has launched a groundbreaking project to test the application of hydrogen in port logistics. The establishment of a hydrogen refuelling station at the Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT) backed by the Clean Port & Logistics Cluster (CLP) has received significant support, with the German government investing EUR 3 million as part of the country's National Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. Volker Wissing, Germany’s Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, hailed the project as a flagship initiative in utilizing hydrogen for port logistics. This move allows for the testing of forward-looking technologies and gathering valuable data from the test field to shape the future of logistics sustainably. Angela Titzrath, CEO of HHLA, emphasized the importance of this infrastructure in hastening the transition to zero-emission logistics and port operations. HHLA aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2040 and is actively working with the Clean Port & Logistics Cluster and global partners to advance hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles and terminal equipment. The company's sustainability strategy, 'Balance Logistics,' focuses on electrifying facilities and equipment across Europe, with hydrogen playing a crucial role in decarbonizing the logistics sector. Additionally, HHLA is involved in importing and selling hydrogen for heavy-duty vehicles, further contributing to sustainability in transportation. This initiative not only underscores HHLA's commitment to sustainability but also offers an opportunity for other companies to access the infrastructure and explore decarbonization measures using green hydrogen. By providing public access to filling stations, the project encourages companies to embrace climate-friendly transport solutions and collectively work towards a greener future in logistics and transportation.
