German energy company RWE has commenced green hydrogen production at a 14 MW pilot electrolyzer plant in Lingen, Germany. The facility utilizes renewable electricity to produce up to 270 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour, employing both alkaline and PEM electrolysis technologies from Sunfire and ITM Power, respectively. RWE plans to gain valuable insights for future industrial-scale hydrogen facilities from this pilot plant, with a 100 MW electrolyzer set to be operational by 2025 and expand to 300 MW by 2027 as part of the GET H2 Nukleus project. The Lower Saxony Ministry provided €8 million in funding for the pilot electrolyzer, while significant government support totaling €818 million was allocated for RWE's large hydrogen projects. These projects were recognized as Important Projects of Common European Interest by the European Commission, enabling the substantial funding from national bodies. RWE's CEO, Markus Krebber, expressed the importance of Lingen in the energy transition, highlighting the company's commitment to green hydrogen production and future capacity expansion to support industrial decarbonization efforts. Additionally, RWE's participation in the GET H2 initiative aims to build Germany's first public-accessible hydrogen infrastructure and drive the hydrogen economy's growth. The endorsement of hydrogen by Federal Minister Robert Habeck and the European Commission underscores the significance of RWE's initiatives in advancing a climate-neutral and sustainable economy.
