Businesses in Scotland have the opportunity to bid for a share of up to £7 million in funding from the Scottish Government to kick start green hydrogen projects across the country. This funding is directed towards covering the development stage costs of green hydrogen production projects, ranging from 5 to 400 megawatts in production capacity. The funds aim to support projects capable of producing enough hydrogen to heat a significant number of homes, between 200 to over 16,000. Additionally, support will be provided for work on the hydrogen supply chain and storage solutions, crucial for scaling up the industry to meet market demand. The scheme, developed in collaboration with Scottish Enterprise, offers organizations the opportunity to apply for a maximum of £2 million in match-funding. This initiative complements the existing Hydrogen Innovation Scheme by the Scottish Government, which has already backed 31 projects across the country since 2023. The funding reflects the Scottish Government's emphasis on green energy, particularly in green hydrogen, as a key driver for economic growth and achieving net zero targets. Acting Minister for Climate Action Alasdair Allan highlighted the vital role of the energy sector, specifically green hydrogen, in Scotland's economy. He emphasized the importance of renewable energy in the green hydrogen production process, underlining the potential for Scotland to lead in renewable energy development. The commitment to growing the hydrogen sector is part of the new Green Industrial Strategy. Scottish Enterprise Director of Energy Transition, Suzanne Sosna, expressed the critical nature of the fund in kickstarting new green hydrogen projects essential for building the hydrogen economy in Scotland. The focus on renewable energy, including green hydrogen, is seen as transformative for Scotland's economy, and Scottish Enterprise is fully dedicated to supporting hydrogen businesses in production, storage, and offtake. Organizations interested in the fund have until 27th September to submit expressions of interest, showcasing Scotland's proactive approach towards green industrial strategies and energy transition.
