Sindh's Green Revolution: Powering the Future with Renewable Energy
Key Ideas
  • Sindh has added 17 renewable projects to the national grid in the past year, including wind, solar, and hybrid green hydrogen projects, showcasing a commitment to alternative sources of power.
  • The province's abundant wind and solar resources, coupled with initiatives to harness wind corridors and offshore wind in the Arabian Sea, highlight its potential for sustainable energy generation.
  • The government aims to generate 4,000MW through wind energy, 500MW through solar PV, and 100MW through solar thermal energy, alongside plans for waste to energy and biofuel projects.
  • Renewable energy is emphasized for its cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits, with efforts to provide off-grid areas with electricity and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The Sindh government in Pakistan has made significant strides in transitioning towards renewable energy sources, with 17 projects added to the national grid in the past year. These projects include 12 wind power, three solar power, one solar hybrid green hydrogen, and one wind solar hybrid project. The government is actively encouraging both local and foreign investments to support mega projects focused on renewable energy technologies like wind, solar, waste to energy, and mini hydel. Sindh is rich in wind resources, with the wind corridor in the region being recognized as one of the strongest, providing consistent energy throughout the year. Additionally, the province receives high levels of solar radiation, making it conducive for solar energy generation. The agriculture and livestock sectors contribute to biomass production, offering opportunities for bioenergy projects. Mehfooz Ahmed Qazi, Project Director of the Alternative Energy Directorate, highlighted the vast potential for wind and solar power generation in Sindh, including the presence of an offshore wind corridor in the Arabian Sea. The government's plans include generating 4,000MW through wind energy, 500MW through solar PV, and 100MW through solar thermal energy. Moreover, initiatives for waste to energy, biogas production, and biofuel pilot projects are in the pipeline. The focus on renewable energy is driven by its cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits, with efforts to expand electricity access to off-grid areas and reduce reliance on expensive fossil fuels.
