SOCAR Partners with Baker Hughes to Enhance Environmental Responsibility at Heydar Aliyev Refinery
Key Ideas
- Baker Hughes will provide technology to reduce emissions at SOCAR's Heydar Aliyev refinery in Baku, targeting methane, sulfur, and hydrogen sulfide removal.
- The project aims to use recovered gas volumes for refining operations, reducing fuel gas consumption, operating costs, and emissions while creating efficiency gains.
- Aligned with global climate initiatives, the project supports Azerbaijan's commitment to end routine flaring at the refinery by 2030, focusing on methane recovery and emission reduction.
- The partnership between SOCAR and Baker Hughes signifies a dedication to sustainable operations and climate goals, furthering SOCAR's vision for a cleaner energy future.
The State Oil Co. of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) has awarded a contract to Baker Hughes Co. to enhance environmental responsibility at the Heydar Aliyev refinery in Baku. Signed during the COP29 climate talks, the contract involves implementing technology to reduce emissions and improve efficiency at the refinery. The project will focus on integrating a gas recovery and hydrogen sulfide removal system to eliminate hazardous H2S, methane, and sulfur emissions. By utilizing recovered gas volumes as fuel for refining operations, the initiative aims to cut fuel gas consumption, operating costs, and overall emissions, while creating new value and efficiency opportunities. This partnership aligns with Azerbaijan's commitments to global climate initiatives, such as the Global Methane Pledge and Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter, with a goal to end routine flaring at the refinery by 2030. The project, set to commission within 24 months, signifies a significant step towards sustainable operations and emission reduction for SOCAR. President Rovshan Najaf highlighted the collaboration with Baker Hughes as a demonstration of SOCAR's dedication to sustainable practices and climate goals, contributing to a cleaner energy future.
