Sonatrach Signs MoUs to Develop Green Hydrogen Projects in Algeria for European Market Supply
Key Ideas
- Sonatrach signed MoUs with international companies like Sonelgaz, VNG, Snam, SeaCorridor, and VERBUND Green Hydrogen to study the feasibility of green hydrogen production in Algeria for the European market.
- The agreements involve examining opportunities for an integrated multi-stakeholder project along the green hydrogen value chain through the SoutH2 Corridor.
- Another MoU was signed with Spanish company CEPSA to conduct a feasibility study for a project including hydrogen electrolysis, renewable energy supply, methanol/ammonia production, and necessary facilities.
- The planned projects aim to produce green hydrogen and its derivatives by leveraging renewable energy sources like solar and wind power in Algeria.
Sonatrach, the Algerian state energy company, has entered into two significant agreements with international partners to explore the development of green hydrogen projects in Algeria with the purpose of supplying the European market. One memorandum of understanding was signed with companies including Algerian Sonelgaz, VNG, Snam, SeaCorridor, and VERBUND Green Hydrogen at the Oran Convention Center. This agreement seeks to jointly assess the feasibility and profitability of an integrated project for green hydrogen production in Algeria through the SoutH2 Corridor. Additionally, Sonatrach signed another MoU with Spanish company CEPSA to conduct a feasibility study for a project aimed at producing green hydrogen and its derivatives. The envisioned project includes the establishment of a hydrogen electrolysis production plant, along with solar and wind power plants to provide renewable energy to the electrolyzers. Furthermore, the plan involves setting up a methanol and/or green ammonia production plant as well as storage, transportation, and other necessary facilities for the successful operation of the project. By leveraging renewable resources and international partnerships, Sonatrach aims to contribute to the production and supply of green hydrogen to the European market, emphasizing sustainability and innovation in the energy sector.
