The Green Hydrogen National Programme (GHNP) in South Africa has experienced a significant surge in investment, with projects totaling over R800 billion, showcasing the country's commitment to green hydrogen initiatives. Public Works and Infrastructure Deputy Minister, Sihle Zikalala, highlighted the progress at the Green Hydrogen Devac conference in Johannesburg. The gazetting of the Strategic Integrated Projects by Infrastructure South Africa (ISA) has played a crucial role in fast-tracking the development of green hydrogen projects. Projects like fuel cell and electrolyser manufacturing in Johannesburg, green ammonia production in the Northern Cape, and green steel projects in different regions are key contributors to job creation and economic advancement. The government aims to utilize a small percentage of the country's land for green hydrogen endeavors, emphasizing the creation of jobs and economic improvement. By setting the GHNP as a Strategic Integrated Project, ISA has facilitated a streamlined development process with defined timeframes for project approvals, enabling a conducive environment for green hydrogen investments. Deputy Minister Zikalala stressed the importance of collaboration between green hydrogen players and the government to enhance manufacturing capabilities and localize product value chains. With a vision to produce millions of tons of green hydrogen annually by 2050, South Africa presents numerous investment prospects, including green shipping, electrolyser manufacturing, and green port developments, underlining the country's commitment to a sustainable and prosperous future.
