South Africa's Green Hydrogen Revolution: Projects Worth Over R800 Billion Launched
Key Ideas
  • South Africa's Green Hydrogen National Programme has attracted projects worth over R800 billion, showcasing significant investment in the green hydrogen sector.
  • Notable projects like the IPM fuel cell facility and the Green Ammonia Production facility are at various stages of development, stimulating economic growth and job creation.
  • Infrastructure South Africa's streamlined approval processes and collaboration between stakeholders and the government are propelling green hydrogen initiatives forward rapidly.
  • By 2050, South Africa aims to produce 6 to 13 million tons of green hydrogen annually, establishing itself as a key player in green hydrogen technology and production.
Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala of Public Works and Infrastructure in South Africa has announced the success of the Green Hydrogen National Programme (GHNP) in attracting projects totaling over R800 billion since its inclusion in the Strategic Integrated Projects (SIPs) in 2022. Highlighting this achievement at the Green Hydrogen Devac conference in Johannesburg, Zikalala pointed out that a significant portion of these investments, around 20%, have progressed to the bankable feasibility stage. Various projects are in different phases of development, including the IPM fuel cell and electrolyser manufacturing facility in Gauteng, the Green Ammonia Production facility in the Northern Cape, and the Green Hydrogen Port Rail and Infrastructure Project in Boegoes Bay. These initiatives aim to boost economic growth and job creation in South Africa. Zikalala emphasized the importance of collaboration between stakeholders and the government to localize the production of value-added products in the green hydrogen sector. With the potential to produce millions of tons of green hydrogen annually by 2050, South Africa is paving the way for investments in green shipping, fertilizer production, electrolyser manufacturing, and port development. Infrastructure South Africa's facilitation of streamlined approval processes and the designation of GHNP as a Strategic Integrated Project have expedited the development of green hydrogen projects. This approach has placed South Africa on a trajectory to become a significant player in the global green hydrogen market, with opportunities for growth and innovation in various sectors.
