Enagas, the Spanish gas grid operator, is making significant progress in the development of a 2,600 km hydrogen network in Spain, which is part of the larger H2Med corridor connecting the Iberian region to northwest Europe. The Chief Executive, Arturo Gonzalo, announced that the project is moving ahead of schedule, with plans to start operations by 2030. This initiative, with an investment of 2.6 billion euros, involves both new pipelines and repurposed gas assets. Enagas is a strong advocate for green hydrogen production, utilizing renewable energy sources, despite facing challenges such as high costs and the need for subsidies. The company's strategy includes diversification into hydrogen infrastructure management, alongside ventures into ammonia and CO2 capture. Enagas's efforts align with Spain's green agenda, leveraging its abundant solar and wind resources to become a leading European producer of green hydrogen. By setting a 2030 target of 12 gigawatts for electrolysers, Spain aims to drive the growth of the green hydrogen sector. Enagas has undertaken measures such as asset sales, dividend reductions, and debt cuts to finance its ambitious plans and support the transition to a greener energy landscape.
