Spain Launches 1.2 Billion Euro Incentive Programme for Large-Scale Renewable Hydrogen Projects
Key Ideas
  • The IDAE in Spain has initiated a 1.2 billion euro incentive programme for large-scale renewable hydrogen projects.
  • Projects must have a minimum of 100 MW of electrolysis power and demonstrate consumption commitments for at least 60% of the produced hydrogen or fuels.
  • The grant will be allocated based on economic, technical, and environmental/socio-economic criteria, with a deadline for submission on 19 September 2024.
  • Eligible projects must have been started after 9 March 2023, and the aid limit per project and company is set at 33% of the budget available in the call.
The Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) has announced a call for proposals for an incentive programme aimed at supporting large-scale production and consumption of renewable hydrogen and derived fuels. The initiative, part of Spain's Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan financed by the European Union, has a total budget of 1.2 billion euros. Projects eligible for funding must have a minimum electrolysis power of 100 MW and are expected to be developed in 'hydrogen valleys' or clusters. Applicants can submit more than one project, but the aid limit per project and company is capped at 33% of the total budget. To qualify, projects must have started after 9 March 2023 and demonstrate consumption commitments for at least 60% of the hydrogen or fuels they produce. The selection process will be competitive, with applications evaluated based on economic, technical, and environmental/socio-economic criteria. The deadline for project submissions is set for 19 September 2024. The initiative aims to drive the development of large-scale renewable hydrogen projects in Spain and contribute to the country's transition towards sustainable energy sources.
