Speyside Hydrogen: Pioneering Green Hydrogen Project to Decarbonize Distilleries in Moray
Key Ideas
  • Storegga launches a consultation for Speyside Hydrogen, aiming to produce green hydrogen to decarbonize distilleries and businesses in Moray.
  • The project plans to use electrolysis of water with renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen, supporting the whisky industry's net zero target by 2040.
  • Speyside Hydrogen will create new high-value jobs, preserve culture, and contribute to the transition to a net-zero economy in Moray.
  • This initiative aligns with Scottish Government's hydrogen policies to replace fossil fuels and achieve the 2045 Net Zero target.
Storegga has initiated a four-week consultation for the innovative Speyside Hydrogen project in Moray, Scotland, to produce green hydrogen. With over 50 distilleries in Moray accounting for a significant portion of fossil fuel demand, the project aims to decarbonize operations and support the industry's net zero goal by 2040. By utilizing electrolysis of water powered by renewable electricity, the production of green hydrogen will have no harmful emissions. The phased build-out at Ballindalloch will initially provide 70MW of hydrogen capacity through electrolyser facilities. The consultation period, ending on 5 September, includes a public event for community feedback at Glenlivet Public Hall on 22 August. This development not only supports decarbonization efforts but also ensures job creation and preservation of culture in the region. Moray's strong heritage of whisky production and renewable energy access make it an ideal location for Speyside Hydrogen. Neil Hardie, the opportunity manager at Storegga, highlights the project's commitment to engaging with the community and integrating their feedback to finalize the design.
