Strathcona County Investing in Hydrogen for Municipal Fleets
Key Ideas
  • Strathcona County is investing in exploring hydrogen as a fuel source for heavy-duty municipal fleets like transit buses and trucks.
  • The municipality is committing $350,000 to test the new technology, build a mobile hydrogen fuelling station, and transition at least one truck to run on hydrogen and diesel this year.
  • This initiative is part of the Alberta Zero Emissions Fleet Fuelling (AZEFF) project in collaboration with the City of Edmonton and Emissions Reduction Alberta.
  • The move towards clean hydrogen projects is seen as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels, with the aim of achieving low-emission fleets in the future.
Strathcona County, located east of Edmonton in Canada, has announced its commitment to exploring hydrogen as a potential fuel source for heavy-duty municipal fleets. The municipality is investing $350,000 in capital and in-kind contributions to test this new technology and construct a mobile hydrogen fuelling station. This station is set to become operational in Edmonton this spring, with plans for a second station in 2026. Partnering with the City of Edmonton and Emissions Reduction Alberta, Strathcona County is part of the Alberta Zero Emissions Fleet Fuelling (AZEFF) project. Stacy Fedechko, the chief commissioner of Strathcona County, highlighted the importance of gaining insights into the performance of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in comparison to battery electric vehicles, especially in Alberta's varying weather conditions. Additionally, the municipality has committed to converting at least one heavy-duty truck to operate on a combination of hydrogen and diesel this year. The aim of these efforts is to contribute to the development of low-emission fleets and align with environmental goals, ensuring high service standards for the community. Clean hydrogen projects are being embraced as sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, emphasizing the shift towards environmentally friendly practices in fleet management.
