Tata Motors, in partnership with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), is embarking on a groundbreaking journey to introduce hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICE) technology in India's transport sector. The pilot project, a part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, is slated to begin this quarter with a focus on assessing the viability of green hydrogen as a sustainable fuel. Over the course of 12-18 months, the initiative will gather essential data on product performance and the necessary hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Trial runs are scheduled on key routes like Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, and Mumbai-Pune. Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors' Commercial Vehicles division, expressed enthusiasm about the project's aim to evaluate the commercial feasibility of hydrogen-powered trucks and refueling infrastructure. The project, featuring 15 hydrogen trucks and support from IOC's refueling stations, is a significant step in the green mobility transition. Furthermore, Tata Motors showcased the Tata Prima H.28, India's first hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle, at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, underscoring the brand's commitment to innovation and sustainability. In addition to the hydrogen initiative, Tata Motors anticipates a recovery in commercial vehicle sales by FY26, following a mixed performance in 2025. Despite challenges like adverse weather affecting sales in certain quarters, Tata Motors remains optimistic about the future, emphasizing the potential for growth and stability in the commercial vehicle market. This partnership between Tata Motors and IOC not only drives innovation but also sets the stage for a greener and more sustainable future in India's transportation landscape.
