TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Collaborate on Major Green Hydrogen Projects in the Netherlands
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and Air Liquide are partnering to develop two green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions from refineries and contribute to renewable energy targets.
  • A joint venture between the companies will operate a 250 MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery, producing 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, with an investment of approximately €600 million.
  • Another project in Maasvlakte will supply 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for TotalEnergies' Antwerp platform, with the aim of cutting site emissions by up to 150,000 tonnes annually.
  • These initiatives align with TotalEnergies' goal to decarbonise hydrogen consumption in European refineries by 2030 and Air Liquide's commitment to low-carbon hydrogen production to support decarbonised growth in Europe.
TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have announced collaboration on two major green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from refineries and contribute to renewable energy targets. The first project involves a joint venture to operate a 250 MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery, producing 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to cut carbon emissions by 300,000 tonnes yearly. The second project in Maasvlakte will see TotalEnergies supply renewable electricity from the OranjeWind project to Air Liquide's ELYgator electrolyser, producing 15,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year for the Antwerp platform to reduce site emissions by 150,000 tonnes annually. These initiatives are part of TotalEnergies' strategy to decarbonise hydrogen consumption in European refineries by 2030. The companies are investing approximately €600 million in the projects and seeking support under subsidy schemes. The partnership aims to drive the European hydrogen economy forward, supporting cleaner energy and sustainable industrial development.
