TotalEnergies SE is exploring the possibility of sourcing green hydrogen from a major project in northeastern Brazil to supply its European refineries. The project, spearheaded by Casa dos Ventos, aims to develop a plant at the port of Pecem with a potential electrolysis capacity of 1.2GW, capable of producing 160,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, along with 900,000 tons of green ammonia. This initiative is crucial for TotalEnergies' strategy to transition from gray hydrogen, derived from fossil fuels, to green hydrogen by 2030, in response to the EU's upcoming fuel standards and the company's emission reduction goals. While the plan is still under discussion, it marks a significant step towards embracing renewable energy sources in the oil industry. TotalEnergies has already secured contracts for substantial green hydrogen quantities from European production and plans to import green ammonia from Saudi Arabia, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and decarbonization.
