Twinghy Project: Introducing Hydrogen in Steel Sector Reheating Furnaces
Key Ideas
  • The Twinghy project, co-funded by the EU, aims to replace natural gas with hydrogen in reheating furnaces in the steel sector, promoting sustainability and energy efficiency.
  • SSAB, among other participating companies, is working on modeling the heating process to improve precision and reduce energy consumption through the use of green hydrogen.
  • The project involves developing a digital twin to simulate and optimize hydrogen combustion, exploring the viability of hydrogen as an alternative fuel in steel production processes.
  • The project will provide insights into the performance, safety, and environmental impact of hydrogen combustion, facilitating informed decision-making towards sustainable energy practices.
The Twinghy project, co-funded by the EU, is set to revolutionize the steel sector by introducing hydrogen as a fuel in reheating furnaces, aiming to replace natural gas. This initiative, hosted in Madrid, Spain, at the Nippon Gases offices, focuses on developing a digital twin to control furnace behavior and optimize operations. The project, with a total budget exceeding EUR 8 million and lasting three years, involves nine participating companies or organizations, with half of the funding coming from the EU. SSAB, a key participant, is exploring the use of hydrogen heating in the steel sector, emphasizing the lower CO2 emissions and enhanced energy efficiency associated with hydrogen combustion. By combining simulation and experimentation, the project aims to provide comprehensive insights into the performance, safety aspects, and environmental impact of hydrogen combustion, paving the way for a transition to sustainable energy practices. SSAB is collaborating with SWERIM to model the heating process for improved precision and reduced energy consumption. Through this project, the goal is to enhance the understanding of how the transition to hydrogen heating can be achieved economically and technically. The consortium, comprising companies and organizations from Spain, Germany, Finland, and Sweden, underscores the importance of industry collaboration in driving the adoption of green hydrogen in steel production processes.
