The University of British Columbia (UBC) has launched the Smart Hydrogen Energy District (SHED), a $23-million facility at its Vancouver campus. SHED will produce green hydrogen using solar and hydro power, operating a water electrolyser, which is a groundbreaking initiative in Canada. The project combines renewable sources on a micro-grid, offering the province's first hydrogen station for both light- and heavy-duty vehicles. The opening ceremony was attended by B.C.'s minister of energy, mines, and low carbon innovation, Josie Osborne, who emphasized the importance of SHED in supporting CleanBC goals and positioning British Columbia as a global leader in the hydrogen economy. Dr. Walter Mérida, the research lead, highlighted hydrogen's role in transitioning to a low-carbon economy and its potential as a bridge for renewable electricity. SHED integrates various technologies within a city block, showcasing compact urban planning with a rooftop solar array powering hydrogen and EV stations. The project received substantial funding from governmental entities and industry partners, indicating strong support for clean energy innovation. With the aim to accelerate climate solutions, SHED seeks collaboration with the private sector and industry partners. The launch of SHED aligns with the growing global hydrogen market, positioning Canada for leadership in hydrogen technologies and sustainable energy services.
