UK Consortium Proposes GBP6.5bn Project HySpeed for Green Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • HydraB Group and partners propose Project HySpeed targeting 1 GW of green hydrogen capacity by 2030.
  • Private-sector coalition including Centrica and JCB aims to reduce CO2 emissions in heavy industry by 1 Mt/year.
  • UK government shortlists 27 electrolytic hydrogen projects for the Second Hydrogen Allocation Round.
  • Previous funding of GBP2bn for 11 green hydrogen projects shows UK's commitment to hydrogen development.
A consortium led by HydraB Group, in collaboration with UK green hydrogen producer Hygen Energy, Ryze Power, HYCAP Group, and Wrightbus, has submitted a proposal to the UK government for the development of Project HySpeed. This project, with a budget of GBP6.5bn (US$8.5bn), aims to establish 1 GW of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. The primary objective of Project HySpeed is to create a national network of hydrogen production hubs to supply energy-intensive industries like steel, glass, and cement through the gas grid. The initiative is supported by a significant private-sector coalition that includes companies like Centrica (British Gas owner), JCB, Johnson Matthey, Heidelberg Materials, ITM Power, and National Gas. The consortium anticipates that by implementing this project, CO2 emissions from heavy industry could be decreased by 1 Mt/year. In addition to the Project HySpeed proposal, earlier in April 2025, the UK government announced the shortlisting of 27 electrolytic hydrogen projects to advance to the next stage of the Second Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR2). This round is expected to provide support for up to 875 MW of green hydrogen capacity. This move follows the UK's allocation of a GBP2bn (US$2.6bn) funding package in November 2024 to support 11 large-scale green hydrogen projects under the First Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR1). These recent developments underscore the UK's commitment to advancing green hydrogen technology and reducing carbon emissions in line with its environmental goals.
