The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced grants totaling $635 million to enhance clean transportation infrastructure in various US regions. The funding, distributed across 27 states, tribal areas, and the District of Columbia, aims to support the installation of more than 11,500 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports along with hydrogen and natural gas fueling infrastructure. These initiatives include bolstering 'community' EV charging in places such as the Cherokee Nation and City of Troy, intending to create new employment opportunities and foster innovative solutions within these communities. Notable projects entail the Cherokee Nation receiving $10.7 million for EV charging installations at 12 community sites, while the City of Troy in Alabama will benefit from over $700,000 for community charging setups at essential locations like hospitals, museums, and universities. Furthermore, the grants will facilitate the development of seven 'corridor' fast-charging projects, with notable investments like the Port Authority of Houston's nearly $25 million allocation for a hydrogen fueling station in Bayport, Texas. The Maryland Department of Transportation, in collaboration with neighboring states, will receive $18.6 million to establish alternative fueling infrastructure along interstate corridors. The initiative aligns with the Biden administration's commitment to advancing clean transportation, given that EVs accounted for almost 9% of U.S. light-duty vehicle sales in the previous year. Forecasts by JD Power suggest that EV sales could reach a 36% market share by 2030.
