V O Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu, India, is on a mission to become the Green Hydrogen-Ammonia hub of the country, with a substantial investment of Rs 41,860 crore. The port has witnessed an increase in cargo handling and is taking strategic measures to enhance its capacity. As part of this initiative, the port has allocated 501 acres of land to four firms for establishing green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing and storage facilities. Currently, a pilot demonstration is underway for the production of green hydrogen, storage, and power generation using fuel cells, scheduled for completion by January 2025.
The port aims to demonstrate bunkering and refuelling capacities for green hydrogen and its derivatives through a green hydrogen Pilot Bunkering project. Additionally, the port is expanding its infrastructure by widening the entrance channel and constructing Berth 10 to accommodate bulk cargo ships. Furthermore, plans are in place to build infrastructure at the oil jetty to handle smaller vessels effectively by mid-2025.
