Wood Group, based in Aberdeen, has been awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) scope by Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) for the Zeevonk hydrogen facility in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The facility will utilize electricity from the 2GW IJmuiden Ver Beta offshore wind farm and a 50MW floating offshore solar plant. The hydrogen plant, with its electrolyser based at Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam, will supply hydrogen to the Hydrogen Network Rotterdam, marking the first phase of a new Dutch hydrogen infrastructure centered in the port. Wood's president of projects for the eastern hemisphere, Gerry Traynor, highlighted the company's expertise in large-scale green hydrogen projects essential for the global energy transition. Wood's commitment to delivering low-carbon solutions and driving the accessibility and scalability of low-emission energy sources worldwide was emphasized. This project is Wood's third collaboration with CIP, following their involvement in other transformative projects like the Coalburn Storage project in Scotland and the green hydrogen Catalina project in Spain. The Zeevonk project director, Claus Vissing-Jørgensen, sees the FEED award as a significant step towards the large-scale hydrogen plant's realization in the Maasvlakte area. Despite recent financial challenges faced by Wood, including a disappointing performance in the previous year and experiencing its first-ever loss in the first half of the year, the company remains focused on seizing opportunities in growing markets, primarily in the energy sector, as stated by chief executive Ken Gilmartin.
