Wyoming's Leadership in Low-Carbon Hydrogen Production
Key Ideas
  • University of Wyoming researchers highlight Wyoming's potential for low-carbon hydrogen production from natural gas.
  • The study, led by Haibo Zhai, emphasizes the feasibility and benefits of a blue hydrogen industry in Wyoming.
  • Collaboration with experts from various fields aims to kickstart a hydrogen economy through integrated analysis and recommendations.
  • The research is part of the Wyoming Innovation Partnership initiative and has received funding for further development and workforce training.
A recent study led by Haibo Zhai, a professor at the University of Wyoming, sheds light on Wyoming's capability to lead in low-carbon hydrogen production from natural gas. Published in Environmental Science & Technology, the research explores the potential of low-carbon hydrogen production by combining steam methane reforming with carbon capture and storage in natural gas-rich states like Wyoming. The study emphasizes the favorable conditions in Wyoming for a successful blue hydrogen industry, including natural resources, infrastructure, and supportive regulations. Collaborating with experts in social sciences, workforce development, and strategic partnerships, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of low-carbon hydrogen production, advocating for a cluster approach to initiate a hydrogen economy. This project, funded under the Wyoming Innovation Partnership initiative, aims to promote sustainable development of a hydrogen ecosystem in Wyoming and enhance education and workforce training in hydrogen energy. The team has secured additional funding for Phase 3 to further advance workforce development, innovation, and research in blue hydrogen, thanks to the support from the Wyoming governor's office and the State Legislature.
