Yanmar's Hydrogen Engine Production Plan Advances in Japan's Zero-Emission Ship Program
Key Ideas
  • Yanmar's hydrogen-fueled engines and fuel cell systems production plan has received approval under Japan's Zero Emission Ship Construction Promotion Project.
  • The project aims to invest over $777.8 million in production facilities for zero-emission vessels using hydrogen and ammonia as fuel, promoting sustainable practices.
  • Yanmar plans to accelerate its hydrogen engine production targets to 2040, exceeding international greenhouse gas reduction goals by achieving 100% carbon-neutral marine power products by 2045.
  • The company's initiative aligns with the YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050 to establish an 'advanced' production system for zero-emission ships powered by hydrogen and batteries.
Yanmar Power Technology, a part of Yanmar Holdings in Japan, has been granted government approval for its production plan of hydrogen-fueled engines and fuel cell systems under the country's Zero Emission Ship Construction Promotion Project. This initiative, selected by Japan's Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, aims to propel the construction of zero-emission vessels utilizing environmentally friendly fuels like hydrogen and ammonia. The project involves significant investments exceeding $777.8 million to establish production facilities in Japan's shipbuilding and marine equipment industry. Yanmar's goal is to lead in next-generation ship technology globally. Yanmar is focusing on developing a cutting-edge production system for zero-emission ships powered by hydrogen and batteries. By investing in essential facilities for hydrogen-based propulsion systems, the company aims to reduce CO2 emissions, enhance industrial competitiveness, and drive economic growth. As part of the YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050, Yanmar has already introduced a hydrogen fuel cell system for marine applications and completed successful onshore tests of a pilot-ignition hydrogen 4-stroke high-speed engine for coastal vessels. With support from the Zero Emission Ship Construction Promotion Project, Yanmar plans to expedite its hydrogen engine production targets, aiming to achieve 100% carbon-neutral marine power products by 2045, surpassing the greenhouse gas reduction objectives set by the International Maritime Organization. Additionally, Yanmar Holdings intends to restructure its subsidiary, Yanmar Power Technology, into two separate entities by October 2025, with a focus on industrial engines and large power products. This strategic move aligns with Yanmar's commitment to sustainability and innovation in the maritime industry.
