Yara International has officially opened its renewable hydrogen plant at Herøya, Norway, marking a significant milestone in the decarbonization efforts of the food value chain, shipping fuel, and other energy-intensive industries. The 24 MW plant is the largest of its kind operational in Europe and utilizes electrolysis of water and renewable energy to produce hydrogen, thereby cutting 41,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The company has already delivered the first tonnes of fertilizers made from renewable ammonia produced at this plant, under the new portfolio named Yara Climate Choice.
Yara's CEO expressed gratitude towards employees, partners, customers, and Enova for their support in this ground-breaking project. The company aims to decarbonize sectors like hard-to-abate industries through collaborative efforts. Yara is focusing on producing low-carbon footprint fertilizers and ammonia using renewable energy sources and carbon capture storage (CCS) technology. By signing agreements for CO2 transport and storage, Yara plans to reduce its annual CO2 emissions and is evaluating large-scale low-carbon ammonia production projects with CCS.
The CEO highlighted the urgency to act to meet the Paris Agreement goals and emphasized the critical role of CCS in rapid and profitable decarbonization. Yara has already reduced emissions significantly since 2005 and is committed to delivering sustainable solutions at scale. The company's strategy includes renewable energy and CCS to ensure a competitive advantage in the green transition. Yara's focus on developing renewable ammonia and advancing the hydrogen economy demonstrates its commitment to a more sustainable future.
