Yorkshire farmers are at the forefront of a project led by The Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE) and Cenex, focusing on the potential use of hydrogen fuel in agriculture. The initiative aims to replace fossil fuels on farms with hydrogen, with a particular focus on the farming sector in Yorkshire. This project will provide insights for a broader initiative by East Coast Hydrogen, a collaboration involving Northern Gas Networks, Cadent, and National Gas, to investigate hydrogen accessibility. The study in Yorkshire will concentrate on on-farm hydrogen production and storage, as well as distribution for local heating applications and fueling hydrogen powertrains in rural areas. Laura Palczynski from Innovation for Agriculture highlights the importance of involving farming voices early in exploring the transition to hydrogen and other alternative fuels to achieve net zero emissions. The project invites farmers in Yorkshire to participate in online workshops to share their perspectives on moving beyond red diesel and to explore the feasibility of using hydrogen and other gas fuels in areas lacking grid connections. These workshops are tailored to different sectors within agriculture, including arable and potatoes, protected horticulture, pigs and poultry, and dairy farming. The workshops are open to all Yorkshire farmers, regardless of their familiarity with hydrogen fuels. This inclusive approach aims to gather diverse insights and ensure the agricultural sector is actively involved in shaping the future of sustainable farming practices through hydrogen adoption.
