Advancing Pipeline Safety: Establishing New Standards for Hydrogen Pipelines
Key Ideas
- The Emerging Fuels Institute completed a project to update pipeline language for hydrogen pipelines in the ASME B31.8 standard.
- The project resulted in a comprehensive guide for pipeline safety, available for free on the PRCI website.
- Over 200 individuals from ASME, PRCI, and the pipeline community contributed to the project, promoting the use of hydrogen for a clean energy future.
- The PRCI project team will support the ASME B31.8 Hydrogen Task Group in presenting the proposed language for review and approval in the 2026 B31.8 edition.
The Emerging Fuels Institute (EFI) of the Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) has successfully completed a Consensus Engineering Requirement (CER) project aimed at updating the pipeline language from the ASME B31.12 Hydrogen Pipelines Standard to establish a new exception chapter for hydrogen pipelines within the ASME B31.8 Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems Standard. The resulting report is a practical and comprehensive guide designed to enhance pipeline safety and support fit-for-purpose projects within the industry. This initiative, led by ASME and PRCI, aims to streamline and standardize hydrogen pipeline requirements by integrating them into the widely used B31.8 standard. The project received feedback and input from over 200 stakeholders within ASME, PRCI, and the broader pipeline community, highlighting a collaborative effort towards advancing the use of hydrogen for a sustainable energy future. The free availability of the final report and webinar on the PRCI website signifies a commitment to knowledge sharing and industry best practices. Moving forward, the PRCI project team will collaborate with the ASME B31.8 Hydrogen Task Group to present the proposed language from the CER for review and approval through a consensus process. The ultimate goal is to incorporate these updated standards into the 2026 edition of the B31.8 standard, further reinforcing the safety and efficiency of hydrogen pipelines in the global pipeline infrastructure.
