The market for green hydrogen is projected to see significant growth post-2030, with estimates suggesting global demand could reach 150 to 500 million metric tonnes per year by 2050. African countries are gearing up to regulate and support the hydrogen sector, aiming to attract investments and create job opportunities. However, challenges like transporting renewable energy over long distances and the complexities of hydrogen transportation pose hurdles that need innovative solutions. Projects like the Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project showcase advancements in long-distance electricity transmission. Despite the challenges, Africa stands to benefit immensely from the green hydrogen market. If African countries secure just 15% of the global hydrogen trade, the continent could see substantial growth in green hydrogen exports, attracting billions in investments and creating millions of job opportunities. To achieve this, African governments must create conducive environments for green hydrogen projects to thrive and remain competitive in the global market.
