ATCO EnPower and CPKC Complete Hydrogen Production and Refuelling Stations in Alberta
Key Ideas
- Two hydrogen production and refuelling stations completed in Calgary and Edmonton by ATCO EnPower and CPKC.
- Facilities include a 1-megawatt electrolyzer, compression, storage, and dispensing systems for locomotive refuelling.
- CPKC's Hydrogen Locomotive Program aims to reduce emissions by retrofitting diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells.
- ATCO EnPower demonstrates commitment to a sustainable future by providing innovative energy solutions.
ATCO EnPower, a division of Canadian Utilities Limited, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City announced the completion of two hydrogen production and refuelling facilities in Calgary and Edmonton. These facilities, operational now, are part of CPKC's Hydrogen Locomotive Program, which involves retrofitting diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to operate without generating emissions directly. Each facility includes a 1-megawatt electrolyzer, compression, storage, and dispensing systems for locomotive refuelling. The Calgary facility's electrolyzer is partially powered by renewable electricity from CPKC's solar power facility. These stations are seen as a crucial step towards a lower carbon transportation future. CPKC aims to establish a cleaner mode of freight transportation using hydrogen and sees these facilities as models for future projects. ATCO EnPower provided the engineering, procurement, and construction services for the stations and will operate them. The collaboration between ATCO EnPower and CPKC is a significant advancement in utilizing hydrogen as a fuel source in commercial transportation. The commitment to sustainable energy solutions and the energy transition is evident in this innovative project.
