There is a significant gap between the ambitious hydrogen goals set at the national and European levels and their actual implementation. The council highlights the risk of losing out in international comparisons and stresses the urgent need for effective measures to ramp up hydrogen projects. The lack of investment decisions matching the planned hydrogen production capacity by 2030 is a major concern. The Hydrogen Council emphasizes the importance of creating reliable framework conditions and accelerating the hydrogen economy development to prevent the shift of value chains abroad. Without swift action, there could be job losses and reduced competitiveness in sectors relying on gas-based energy sources. Katherina Reiche, Chairwoman of the Hydrogen Council, underlines that hydrogen is essential for maintaining value chains, key industries, and achieving climate targets. To address these challenges, the Council calls for demand measures, state guarantees, and a timely import strategy from the government. These actions are deemed critical to closing the cost gap between hydrogen and fossil fuels and ensuring the financial viability of hydrogen producers and consumers.
