A recent study commissioned by Hydrogen South West has identified Bridgwater, along with other regional locations like Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, and South West Cornwall, as crucial spots for setting up hydrogen refuelling stations to cater to commercial hydrogen vehicle fleets by 2030. The research conducted by WSP focused on assessing the market demand for hydrogen as a transport fuel for various types of vehicle fleets, including utilities, logistics, freight, and passenger vehicles. The study projected that by 2030, around 7,000 vehicles in the region could potentially run on hydrogen, necessitating up to 88 tonnes of hydrogen daily to support their operations. The Chair of Hydrogen South West, Andy Clarke, emphasized the importance of hydrogen as an efficient solution for meeting the refuelling needs of vehicle fleets in the predominantly rural South West region. The positive sentiment towards hydrogen was further echoed by Stuart Cory from WSP, highlighting the critical role hydrogen can play in supporting low carbon land transportation in the area. The study's findings aim to serve as a foundational guide for future developments in hydrogen infrastructure, with plans to establish hydrogen refuelling clusters at strategic locations aligned with major transportation corridors and key projects in the region. Hydrogen South West, comprising leading brands, industrial giants, consultants, and key entities like Bristol Port and Wessex Water, is actively driving the advancements in hydrogen technology and infrastructure to meet the region's decarbonization goals.
